What is the ADF Job Opportunities Assessment?
The Job Opportunities Assessment, usually shortened to JOA, is a reasoning assessment used during the Australian Defence Force application process. People also search for it as the ADF aptitude test or Defence Force aptitude test. It includes numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning items. Your result helps inform the career options available to you within the wider recruitment process; it is not a promise of selection for a particular role.
This free JOA breakdown course introduces approaches to the question styles explored in our videos. It is designed for viewers who want to follow worked examples, understand how an answer is reached and try questions independently. You can watch every lesson without buying a product or creating an account.
How much time do you have in the JOA?
The official ADF Careers guide describes 51 questions in a 20-minute assessment period. Dividing the total time by the number of questions gives roughly 23.5 seconds per question on average. That is a pacing reference, not a separate countdown for every item. A question you recognise may take less time, while another may need more thought.
Keep accuracy and pace together. The official guidance recommends answering questions you feel confident about first and returning to harder items if time allows. Follow the instructions in your actual assessment rather than treating any practice video's timer as an official rule.
What the three reasoning lessons cover
Begin with numerical reasoning: number sequences, missing-value matrices and worded numerical problems. The lesson focuses on identifying relationships before choosing a calculation. Continue to verbal reasoning for word meanings, analogies, odd-one-out questions and evaluating statements. Finish with abstract reasoning, where you compare shapes, positions, rotation and shading to test possible patterns.
These are the examples and teaching categories used in this course. They should not be read as a guarantee of the exact questions, order or distribution you will encounter in the official JOA.
How to use this free JOA preparation course
Watch the explanation, pause before a practice answer is revealed and make your own attempt. When you review the solution, ask which detail mattered and which information distracted you. Keep a short note of the question types you want to revisit. You can move between lessons using the course navigation and return to a difficult example whenever needed.
ADF Careers describes the JOA as an assessment of natural abilities that does not require specific study. This independent course offers optional explanations and familiarisation, not guaranteed score improvement. Start with the official guide and its examples, then use these lessons if you find the format helpful. When ready, continue to the numerical reasoning lesson below.
