ADF YOU Session: what to do after your Careers Coach call

Turn the end of your Careers Coach conversation into a clear follow-up list: record requests, check Candidate Hub tasks and prepare for the next appointment.

Service Prep editorial · Updated 11 September 2026

Write down the agreed actions

As soon as the call ends, record the roles discussed, questions answered and any actions requested. Mark anything you are unsure about so you can ask for clarification. Do not rely on remembering every detail later.

Check your Candidate Hub

Review the tasks and medical-history instructions issued to you. Complete information accurately and use the required channel for sensitive documents. If you need supporting records, organise them rather than guessing an answer.

Prepare for the next appointment

Read the instructions for any assessment invitation and note the practical requirements. Interview research, medical paperwork and fitness preparation are different tasks, so keep separate checklists where useful.

Keep communication current

Monitor the contact methods you gave the ADF and tell your recruitment contact if important details change. Respond to requests promptly, while recognising that appointment timing and role availability are not entirely within your control.

Write a call debrief while the details are fresh

Create three headings: what we discussed, what I need to do and what I still need clarified. Record the role preferences discussed in the wording you understood, then separate confirmed information from questions. If you are uncertain about a point that affects your next step, seek clarification instead of treating your recollection as a final instruction.

A short debrief is more useful than a long narrative of the whole call. Aim for a record that lets you identify the next action immediately. Include who to contact and where the instruction came from. Keep personal information in an appropriate private location.

Turn advice into specific actions

“Do more research” is difficult to complete. “Read the training section for my first preference and write down two questions” is a clearer task. Apply the same approach to any follow-up you have been given: identify the action, the required channel and the date if one has been specified.

If another organisation must supply a record, note that dependency. If you have submitted something, keep any confirmation. This organisation does not change the recruitment process; it helps you see what is complete and what still needs attention without repeatedly rereading every message.

Update your role research after the conversation

Review your shortlist in light of what you learned. Did a role become clearer? Did the discussion reveal an assumption you need to check? Add the answer or question to the relevant role page in your notes. Avoid leaving corrected information in one document while continuing to use an older version elsewhere.

If you are considering a different preference, research the new option before explaining the change. Be ready to state what interests you and what you want clarified. Do not choose based only on a title or an expectation that it will lead automatically to a different job later.

Prepare for the next confirmed appointment

Wait for and follow the instructions relevant to your next stage. Use any preparation time to organise truthful examples and the role information you have verified. You do not need to predict every possible interview question to make progress on those tasks.

If your circumstances or availability change, inform the appropriate contact through the official channel. Keep communication concise and factual. The aim after a YOU Session is a clear, current application record and a practical next step, rather than trying to interpret silence or informal stories as an outcome.
