What is the ADF Job Opportunities Assessment?

A first-time applicant’s introduction to the JOA, the reasoning skills involved and the difference between official assessment and optional practice.

Service Prep editorial · Updated 11 September 2026

Where the JOA fits

After you begin your ADF application, follow the official assessment invitation. The JOA supports the process of matching applicants with roles. It is not the only entry requirement and a commercial practice result is not an official decision.

What the questions involve

The assessment includes numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning. These are reasoning tasks rather than a military-knowledge exam. Read all instructions, including how many answers a question requires, before responding.

Set up properly

Use the device and browser required by your invitation. Allow uninterrupted time and complete the official assessment independently. Service Prep practice working on a phone does not mean the official assessment supports the same device.

Try optional practice

The free Service Prep quiz provides eight questions and results without an account. Paid practice tests offer longer timed sessions and answer review. Official ADF examples are also available, and purchasing commercial practice is not a requirement to apply.

What aptitude practice is trying to show you

Reasoning practice gives you a way to examine how you use information. In an original numerical example, a journey of 120 kilometres over two hours has an average speed of 60 kilometres per hour. That calculation uses distance divided by time. It does not establish the speed at every moment of the journey.

The distinction between what can be calculated and what cannot be concluded is useful across reasoning tasks. In a word problem, check the conditions. In a passage, identify the evidence. In a diagram, test the rule against each panel. These examples explain a learning approach; they are not a complete description of the official question bank.

Read the official guide before choosing extra resources

Start with the source linked below and the instructions supplied to you. Note the practical requirements that affect your assessment setup and ask ADF Careers about anything unclear. Commercial resources should not become your authority for opening links, resolving access problems or understanding official results.

If you choose additional practice, look at what you receive. A question count, a timer and an answer review describe concrete features. A promise that every candidate will obtain a desired role does not. Select optional materials according to your learning needs and remember that a provider's score is a result on that provider's questions.

Try a small exercise before a full simulation

Use a short practice session to see how you read instructions and review answers. After each question, explain why your answer follows from the information. If you cannot explain it, mark the question for review even if you selected the correct option. A lucky guess and an understood solution are different learning outcomes.

When you move to a timed session, avoid interrupting it to search for answers. Review afterwards and record the issues that emerged. This gives you a clearer description of the session than a percentage alone. It is an optional practice routine, not a requirement for sitting the JOA.

Keep the next step in view

The assessment sits within a wider application. Keep role research and administrative tasks organised while following your recruitment instructions. After the assessment, use the official discussion of your results to understand your options. Do not attempt to infer a personal outcome from somebody else's report.

For someone encountering “JOA”, “aptitude test” and “Job Opportunities Assessment” in different places, the useful starting point is the official terminology and your own correspondence. From there, choose any extra preparation deliberately and keep expectations tied to what the resource can actually provide.
