Get organised for beep test preparation with official technique guidance and a structured course for your service branch.

Confirm the assessment

Check whether a shuttle-run assessment applies to your chosen role and what current instructions you have been given. Use ADF Careers and your Careers Coach for official targets. A level quoted on an older website may refer to a different role or assessment.

Learn how the test works

Before using an audio track, read the official instructions for distance, turning and completion. Use an appropriate, clear surface and accurate markings. Practising with an incorrectly measured course will make your results difficult to compare.

Follow a structured plan

Use a training program suited to your starting level. Keep notes about completed sessions and questions for a qualified trainer. If you experience pain or have concerns about your readiness to train, seek individual advice rather than pushing through.

Review without over-testing

Treat a practice result as one piece of information. Look at consistency and technique alongside the level reached, and leave space in your routine for the program’s recovery periods.

Understand the assessment setup

The official PFA technique brochure describes a 20-metre shuttle-run setup with an audio pace that increases between levels. Read the instructions before trying to interpret a practice result. The exercise is not simply an untimed run between two approximate points.

When recording practice, note the track and setup as well as the result. A number without context is hard to compare. If you are uncertain about the scoring convention or instructions, clarify them before setting targets or comparing your result with a published requirement. Use the current requirements for your own role rather than assuming every example in an older training brochure applies to you.

Keep the practice setup consistent

Review the instructions for the audio, distance and turning procedure before using a practice result as a reference. An inaccurately marked course can change what you are measuring. Choose an appropriate clear setting and obtain help if you do not understand the setup.

Record any change in conditions rather than treating every attempt as directly comparable. This guide does not prescribe how frequently you should test or what intensity is suitable for you. It explains why a consistent setup and clear record are important when you use a result within an appropriate training plan.

Separate learning the task from maximum testing

Understanding the instructions and obtaining a maximum result are different goals. You can review how the task works without treating every session as an attempt at your best score. Follow the program appropriate to your circumstances and keep its recovery periods.

If technique or readiness is uncertain, use qualified guidance rather than repeatedly testing to answer the question yourself. A training course can organise information but cannot observe how you move or assess a health concern. Keep your questions specific so the person helping you can understand what needs clarification.

Connect your practice to your actual role

Check whether the shuttle run is part of the requirement relevant to your application and use the current official target. Avoid combining a Navy in-service table with an Army entry requirement, or assuming that a score in an older guide applies to every role.

For your planning record, use headings for the requirement, the source, the setup and your next question. This gives you something more useful than a standalone score. The purpose of beep-test preparation is to understand and prepare for the relevant task, with an appropriate plan, rather than chase an unverified number from search results.
